Planting Trees Safely Near Power Lines

1.  Consider mature height of trees. Do not plant near overhead power lines that can grow to 25 feet tall. A mature height of less than 15 feet is recommended.

2.  Do not plant near underground utility services. Underground power lines aren't deeply buried, and in many cases can be buried close to the surface, it's important to plant your trees a safe distance away.  

3.  Keep areas around electric meters, transformers or other electrical equipment free of any vegetation that could limit service access.

4.  DO NOT PRUNE trees that are anywhere near overhead utility lines. If utility lines are present, even if you think they are not power lines, call your power company and they will tell you if it is OK to prune and how they can help. If pruning is needed near a power line, they will usually do it free of charge.

5.  Before digging, call  811 . The local underground utility service will mark the location of underground utilities so that accidental contact, damage and injuries can be avoided.
